As the bigger sibling of Woop Woop, the Black Chook once again represents a collaboration between Ben Riggs the winemaker at Penny’s Hill, and Tony Parkinson, proprietor of Penny’s Hill.
The Black Chook is sourced from two of the best known wine growing regions in South Australia,
namely McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek.
McLaren Vale has an unrivalled reputation in Australia and indeed the world, for growing Shiraz which is full-flavoured, ripe and balanced. With excellent fruit and length, McLaren Vale Shiraz also has a terrific ability to age. Situated approximately 40km to the south of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, McLaren Vale has a Mediterranean-type climate. With winter dominant rainfall, warm, dry summers that are tempered by the proximity to the Gulf St. Vincent and low humidity, McLaren Vale is one of the most consistent climates in which to grow premium wine grapes.
Located on the floodplains of the Angas and Bremer River about 70km south of Adelaide, Langhorne Creek is one of the older wine growing regions in Australia with first vines planted in the 1850’s. Traditionally Langhorne Creek is a red growing area, and characteristically produces Shiraz that is spicy, flavoursome and elegant. Recent years have seen white varieties becoming more established in the region, and the Viognier in the Black Chook is from Angas Vineyards in Langhorne Creek.
Co-fermenting small amounts of Viognier skins with Shiraz adds a wonderful apricot perfume, at the same time as intensifying the deep rich colour and velvety mouthfeel of the wine.
And what is a chook? It's Australian for chicken!
